Description
A Rare Pair of Irish 18th century walnut chairs, the crest rail centered by a scallop shell and scrolls above a baluster splat and shaped stiles, the shaped seat rails with drop-in seats covered in associated brightly coloured 18th century French 'bizarre' needlework, standing on cabriole legs headed by carved scallop shells and flowers terminating in trifid feet with wavered stretchers.

James Latham's double portrait of Bishop Clayton and his wife (fig.86) shows the couple seated on vase-shaped splat-back chairs which must date from the 1720s or 1730s and are similar to a set of three which were probably made for the fifth Earl Of Antrim when he was living at Ballymagarry (fig.87).
